The Big Sleep (+)

Oh the plot developments in the novel The Big Sleep takes are almost as twisted as the tongue of its lead character and narrator Phillip Marlowe. Raymond Chandler has had some potshots taken at him by todays literary elite, calling his stuff pure drivel, but the man knew how to turn a phrase. The narration in this book is delight for any fan of noir. This is one of the quintessential dame and detective books. The characters are bold and verbose. The mystery is seedy and dark. It may seem cliche this day and age, but I really enjoyed the experience and would definitely recommend the journey to any other sleuths.

Pros: The characters, the narration and the setting are all pure noir.
Cons: Perhaps too predictable or too dated for some.
