Warning: This film features graphic sexual and violent content. It is not for everyone.
This movie made me angry. It made me angry in the way it wanted to make me angry. It raised great questions. Why is our movie ratings board not public? Why are they not accountable? Why is their not a system? What makes sex more taboo than violence? It's all fairly ridiculous.
This film basically allows filmmakers to vent. The MPAA often takes the message of films and ignores them. Instead boils the film down to a series of scenes. Scenes that need to be edited. Movies that verge into unusual content needs to have it cut. If it is foreign to American culture it needs to be cut. It all seems odd to make these sort of distinctions around the R rating. Personally I don't believe children should see R movies at all. I don't understand why they are taken into account at that point. They should be out of the equation.
The film takes into account many issues that are much more offensive than what the MPAA cuts. Women in peril and violence without consequence are so much more offensive and damaging to fragile psyches.
The film has its low points. Is it really necessary to hire a private eye to invade the privacy of the MPAA members? No. That felt really frivolous and unnecessary to me. It's the job of somebody else to investigate that, not me, the audience member.
It's a good documentary. I would recommend it to those who are interested in why films are rated what they are.
Pros: Very interesting debate
Cons: Investigation into the personal lives of the members was out of place
