Heavenly Creatures (+)

Heavenly Creatures
begins with an intriguing teaser that immediately delves you into the world of two killers. Then the actual movie began and I was a little worried. It seemed overacted and the visual style was a little too kinetic for the subject matter. I didn't understand how this film had helped Peter Jackson snag the Lord of the Rings franchise. But then the film hit its stride.

The actresses toned it down a little and the film fully realized the fantasy that the two children had created. The fantasy world is amazing considering the budget. People made of clay dancing about in an ancient kingdom that only existed in the girls diaries. As the real world falls apart their fantasy world grows. It is a great dichotomy and Peter Jackson balanced it very well for someone who was still considered a novice at the time.

The subject matter isn't for everyone, but if you are willing to take the journey into the mind of two kiwi lesbian killers then this is the one to take.

Pros: Visual Style, Interesting look into the minds of killers
Cons: Acting at times

I always enjoyed this movie. Especially since newcomer Kate Winslet was in it.
