Chick Flick Alert: Yes, I watch these. So sue me. I enjoyed The Holiday...mostly. It was an odd little film, with many subplots that I found extraneous and one subplot that I thought could have been a movie all by itself. Why does Jack Black have a girlfriend? Boring and redundant. I don't care about him and his girlfriend whom we never really meet. I care about him forming a relationship with Kate Winslet. As for Cameron Diaz, she does okay in her role, but Jude Law is the one that makes that relationship interesting. Both of these stories are okay, but nothing we haven't seen before. And what was up with all the self-indulgent movie stuff? Wow.The best part of the movie for me was seeing the relationship between Eli Wallach and Kate Winslet. That was sweet.
Anyway a good movie to watch on a rainy afternoon.
Pros: Eli Wallach, Cute
Cons: Nothing special, No real resolution

Good blog and feel free in visiting mine
I think they're just trying to redo "Love Actually" but in an American fashion. And Jack Black and a movie like this just doesn't sound right.
I loved this movie. I'm all about more serious films but I think a well done romantic comedy is a gem. Jack Black's character needed to have a girlfriend because there needed to be some conflict. It would have been too easy for him to get together with Kate Winslet's character. Their poor choice in partners serves as a common denominator that helps them bond more deeply.
As far as the many subplots, I think people either like that style or they don't. Or it has to be very well done but some people will still hate it. I loved both "Love Actually" and "The Holiday." I enjoy collage like subplots, but this is also the element of my own writing that is most criticized. I like to write a lot within a small space and the way my mind works is that it jumps from one thing to another and I find plot lines like that more challenging then purely sticking to one theme that's developed more thoroughly. I'm told that my creative non-fiction essays could become ten essays, developing each idea more, but that it's confusing as one. I guess this may either be a result of having read too much post-modern strangely formatted works, or I simply need to work more on improving the structure of my writing. I think it's interesting that I love this type of movie too though...
Anywho, this is kind of a long rant for a comment, but I feel like it's just part of a conversation we would have if we were still in the same town.
Hope you are well.
